Area lake levels are holding stable at 359 ft with low flow rates. TVA is showing slightly more water coming into the system than is being released, with around 28,000 cfs coming in and 24,000 cfs leaving. Water temps have made a big comeback, with surface temps this weekend just over the 70 degree mark and rising. Both the Duck and Buffalo Rivers are low and looking good for outdoor activities.
The best fishing is coming from both bluegill and catfish this past week, with the warming water, bluegill are ready to spawn and starting to show up in the normal spawning areas across our area. Catfish will follow the bluegill, looking for nests to rob of eggs. Some area fishermen have been finding some bedding bluegill, but this week should see the bulk of fish moving in to spawn. Best catches are in the protected bays with sandy/gravel bottoms close to vegetation. Often bluegill will spawn in the same locations year after year, so knowing where the beds are can help locate some for the frying pan.
Catfish still are being taken in the same areas that bluegill are spawning, although most catfish are not looking for spawning areas just yet. Most species of catfish will not spawn until a constant water temperature of 74 degrees is maintained for a few days, which is usually around the end of the month into June.
Bass seem to have mostly spawned, and are heading out towards the ledges for which Kentucky Lake is famous for. Some good bass are being found out in open water on humps and points heading out towards the river flats. Crappie seem to have been scattered this past week, as post spawn fish recuperate from the spawn. Both bass and crappie should be on the prowl for food as the warmer weather approaches.
Boating season unofficially begins this weekend with Memorial day weekend approaching. Boaters are reminded to make sure all the required safety equipment is onboard before boating. A wearable lifejacket for each person on the boat, throw cushion, fire extinguisher and valid registration are some examples. As always, check boat batteries, fuel levels, drain plug, running lights, etc before even heading to the water.
