Lake levels are about to jump, with the rainfall this past week as well as the predicted rain early this week. It’s looking like TVA is going to raise the lake levels to summer pool by mid week. Current levels are around 357 ft, with a strong flow rate of around 275,000 cfs. Normal for this time of the year should be at 354 ft and an average flow of around 25,000 cfs. Surface temps are hanging in the mid 50’s, but may back off due to the cold front last Friday.
Spring turkey season will open with the juvenile hunt on March 27th and 28th. The regular spring turkey season always opens on the Saturday closest to April 1st, which this year will be April 3rd. Bag limits have changed this year, with 1 bearded turkey/day not to exceed 3 for the season.
Fishing was improving until the large amount of water entered the system this past week, as the Tennessee River and Cumberland River systems received a large amount of rain, and the lakes took a jump in levels. A cold front also entered the picture, accompanied by some cooler weather and strong winds. This has slowed the fishing down somewhat, as well as made it harder for fishermen to fish. One saving grace is that now the federal refuges are open as of March 16th. Fishermen can head to the Duck River bottoms or Crosscreeks and fish the impoundments, enabling fishermen to escape some of the wind. Not much information on whether or not any success form those who have gone this past week.
Fishermen and hunters are reminded that the license year starts March 1st and goes through the end of February each year, so make sure you have the current licenses before hunting or fishing.
